MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hello St. Al Family and Friends,

In light of this week’s events, I decided to share a quote from Martin Luther King Jr and the Prayer of St. Francis with our students this morning. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”—Martin Luther King Jr. Continue reading

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Merry Christmas to our St. Al family and friends,

This year Christmas is different but there are so many things that, for me, still feel the same.  Christmas music has always been a dear part of the season for me and my family.  Whether it was singing in the church and school choirs, playing records as we put up our decorations, or playing my ukulele for my husband, music has been part of each holiday season.  Music speaks to our souls, serves as the background to our celebrations, and allows us to express what we cannot get out in words.

It was this Christmas music love that led to my love of Andy Williams.  While I always say he is a source of year-round enjoyment, it is his Christmas music that speaks to so many.  Songs like “Bells of St. Mary’s”, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, and Sleigh Ride” scream Christmas cheer to me.  Being the big fan that I am, I was surprised to discover one new (to me) favorite about five or six years ago, “Christmas is a Feeling in Your Heart”.  This song captures the meaning of this beautiful season and warms the heart the way any great Christmas song can.

From the Desk of the Librarian

Happy Native American Heritage Month! During the month of November, we’ve been reading stories that celebrate the history and traditions of our nation’s first peoples. As we all know, our land wasn’t discovered so much as it was conquered and, with that turmoil, the native people who lived here first have been given a side note in history. Our goal this month is to share the stories and rich histories of our country’s first caretakers and to amplify their voices so we can appreciate all we have learned from them. One word we have learned in our read-aloud is Otsaliheliga (oh-jah-LEE-hey-lee-gah), the Cherokee word for “we are grateful”. And, one of our favorite stories so far has been Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard. Don’t be surprised if your primary grade student is interested in making some fry bread soon!
