Attention runners! A note from XC Coach Joe Sperry…

Hello parents,

This fall, because of COVID-19 precautions, CYO is offering runners the opportunity to participate in Cross Country “virtually”.  Registration is free with the option to buy a t-shirt!  How does it work?
Register your runner(s) up for cross country via Team Sideline — Between September 15 and October 11, students run their age-appropriate race distance individually and email weekly times to me.  There will be no organized practices. I will enter your runner’s result into Athletic.net where times for all CYO runners will be logged for each weekly “virtual meet.”  Maps of the courses at Woodland Park are available here — or create any running course that is easy for your family!

At the end of the season, boys and girls with top times in their age group will receive a CYO cross country T-shirt. I will also track runners’ times against each grades’ All-Time Top 30 for the St. Al-John program.

Note for 7th and 8th graders:
If there is enough runner interest and parental support, I would like to see about setting up a “time trial” opportunity for our 7th and 8th-grade runners on the official course in October. The idea is that participants would run the course individually in a staggered fashion, maybe 10 minutes apart. It would be a chance for them to get an accurate time. If there is enough interest we could discuss this idea further to see if it could be safe and practical. (For example, I think it would be OK for participants to run with a family member. And course monitors would be needed along the route.) Again, if there is enough interest we can explore this idea.

If your runner is interested in participating in this virtual season, go ahead and sign up on Team Sideline.  You’ll have the option of paying a $15.00  fee to add a t-shirt and help CYO cover its staffing costs.  More details will be shared with registered families next week.  If you have any questions at this time, please email me.  Be well and stay safe!

June 5

That’s all the news for now.  Please send any CYO questions to Julie Giebel [email protected] or [email protected].
