Principal’s Corner: August 9, 2019–School Startup Event

Message from the Principal

Hello St. Al Family and Friends,

The end of summer is fast approaching and we are working hard to make sure everything is ready in time for our first day on September 3. As we prepare for the upcoming year, we are offering a new event that will allow your family to get ahead with paperwork and planning.  Please join us on August 20, 2019, from 2-6 pm in the school cafeteria to fill out paperwork, sign-up for volunteer opportunities, register for clubs/activities, go through the uniform exchange, and learn about some of the groups who assist our community. We will even have spirit wear for purchase! Can’t attend? No worries, you are welcome to stop by the office starting Aug 19 from 9 am-3 pm to fill out forms and receive information.  We hope to see you on Aug 20 but if not, we look forward to seeing all of you on September 3.

Reminders

1.  Cold and Flu Season:  If your child has a fever or is feeling ill, please keep them home.  Remember that students should not return to school until they are fever and vomit free for at least 24 hours.  This will prevent the spread of germs and allow students who are sick a chance to rest and recover.
2. Drop-Off & Pick-Up:  Please make sure you are heading in the right direction during drop-off and pick-up times.  Need a refresher? A parking flow map is located in the Family Information Booklet and also here.

Track Registration is opening soon!

Does your child like to run?  Jump?  Throw things? Get to know kids in other grades?  Have fun?  Track season is starting soon!  Sign your 4th – 8th grader up for the St. Al/St. John track team.  We had a ton of fun last year with a record 85 kids participating, and a 2018 CYO championship team win.  We look forward to another year and any and all are welcome to participate regardless of experience or ability.

Practices start Monday, March 25 and continue through the end of May.  Practices will be Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:00 PM at the Ingraham High School track.  This year we are also able to offer Friday practices, 6:30 – 7:30, for those who want to do a bit more running or get additional practice on their field events.  Meets will be on Saturdays, May 4, 11, 18, and June 1. There is also a very fun 8th grade-only Pentathlon on May 19 that we encourage all 8th graders to participate in—pizza party details will be forthcoming.

Like cross-country, practices are optional–we understand kids have many other commitments, so please send your kids when it works. Please don’t worry if you can attend any or all of the meets.  Also, we understand many kids do club sports outside of school, so if they can’t make any practices but will be running elsewhere, we would still love to have them for meets if they are interested, so let us know.

We’re welcoming back Mike Martinez as distance coach and Trevor Sevigny as sprinting coach, and are thrilled to have Dave White and Rachel Lambert on board to coach sprinting and Chris and Marie Holt back to continue their support with coaching distance.  If anyone else has a passion for track, we welcome any and all parent-helpers at practices.

Monthly Teacher Luncheon Volunteers Needed

Monthly Teacher Luncheon Volunteers Needed!

Help show our wonderful faculty and staff how much we appreciate all the time and hard work that they put into giving our children the very best educational experience possible. For the last Thursday of each month, I am organizing volunteers to provide lunch for them in the Teacher’s Lounge.

Our next Teacher Luncheon is Thursday, February 28.   Please sign up HERE!

Use the Sign Up Genius below to volunteer. We need about 4 volunteers to bring mains, sides, salads, desserts, etc. Feel free to sign up for any month that works for you. It’s a great way to show our appreciation and earn your volunteer hours. (Every $20 spent on food = 1 volunteer hour.)

Contact Katy Coleman with any questions. Thank you!

Healthy Habits for the Christmas Holiday (1)

Healthy Holiday Habits

As we all know, it’s that time of the year for colds, coughs, fevers, and flu. Many people travel – or double dip in the chips and dips – and germs just get around. Please remember our healthy habits:

  • regular hand washing (20 seconds with soap and water – time enough for an Our Father or a Hail Mary and Glory Be Prayer!)
  • get lots of rest
  • drink lots of water
  • eat nutritious foods.

Staying home when you are sick with a cough or cold helps prevent the spread of germs. If you have a fever or are vomiting, stay at home at least 24 hours after the symptoms have subsided. If a fever is particularly high and/or lasts more than 48 hours, contact your physician.

We wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!
